November 16th 2024
Kei Space Design, a leading Canadian exhibition design company, and Lowell Observatory are proud to announce the grand opening of the new Astronomy Discovery Center, a world-class, multi-million dollar educational and immersive experience.
The grand opening is on November 16, 2024. This groundbreaking centre, located at Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona, is recognized by Smithsonian Magazine as one of “The Most Anticipated Museum Opening of 2024”. It promises to redefine the way visitors engage with astronomy through meticulously planned, cutting-edge exhibits that foster curiosity and expand knowledge of the cosmos.
“The journey to get here has been one of the most… fulfilling experiences of my career. The benefits that this centre will bring to the people of North Arizona and beyond will be life-changing” says Kei Space Design’s founder Juan Tanus.
This discovery centre has huge innovations and implications for Canadian Exhibition Design companies. “We’re helping to make Canada be noticed in terms of public education observatories. We’re putting Canada on the map” comments Ian McLennan, the former Director of Canada’s first public planetarium.
The Astronomy Discovery Center features state-of-the-art facilities that bring the wonders of space closer than ever before. With a range of immersive and hands-on exhibits, it invites visitors of all ages and abilities to engage deeply with the mysteries of the cosmos. Some of the centre’s most exciting features include:
Stardust Lab: The gallery invites guests to participate in the search for answers to the big questions: Where did we come from? How did we get here? What’s next? All through the lens of science and astronomy.
Origins Gallery: At the heart of the Astronomy Discovery Center hangs a breathtaking, three-story captivating sculpture. It mesmerizes guests through the vibrant, awe-inspiring journey of the explosive origins of the Big Bang, to the formation of our solar system, to humanity as we now know it.
Orbits Curiosity Zone: This fully immersive gallery is designed for toddlers to pre-teens. Led by two playful characters, children will learn about basic scientific principles and how these relate to the field of astronomy. Activities include a rocket launcher, a climbing space station, light tables, and more!
Dark Sky Planetarium: Located on the roof-top deck, the Dark Sky Planetarium offers a panoramic view of the night sky. Live presentations led by Lowell educators guide visitors through the wonders of the universe. A large format, folding screen offers a close-up view of the marvels of the cosmos.
Lowell Universe Theater: Live presenters will wow guests with visually stunning journeys through the universe. Presentations are supported by a 7.5m tall, 150 degree wrap-around LED screen. A one-of-a kind experience!
Glowing Walkways: As part of Lowell Observatory’s commitment to preserving dark skies, visitors can wander along glow stone pathways. Wander these paths and explore astronomical features and designs at any time of day.
Open Deck Observatory: A curated collection of telescopes housed under a roll-off room. This observation space will provide visitors with a first-hand look into the wonders of the sky. Go take a look for yourself!
Kei Space and Lowell’s ‘ADA Plus” approach has focused on universal design principles, ensuring that all visitors, including those with physical, sensory, or cognitive disabilities, can experience the centre’s awe-inspiring exhibits. This includes ramps, wheelchair-accessible pathways, tactile displays, and sensory-friendly options in high-intensity areas. The Observatory and Kei Space Design are dedicated to making the wonders of astronomy accessible to everyone.
The grand opening ceremony on November 16 will be a celebration of both cosmic discovery and human creativity.
Kei Space Design is thrilled to welcome the public to the opening of the Astronomy Discovery Center, a project that represents years of collaboration and innovation. This milestone reflects the dedication of the Kei Space team, whose thoughtful and inclusive approach to design has earned recognition in the field of science centre development. Bill Peters, a leading planner and innovator who has guided the development of over $300 million worth of projects says “Kei Space Design is at the top of the field for science centres…[they] thoughtfully design and draw in experts… If you want a good science centre design, you need Juan.”
